- Depression and anxiety are common among clients presenting to drug and alcohol services. The implication of this is that treatments for depression and anxiety should be available within drug and alcohol treatment settings. We recommend a stepped care approach to depression and anxiety symptoms and disorders in drug and alcohol settings. Avenues available for intervention include: (i) treating substance use first and monitoring mental health symptoms; (ii) treating mild mental health symptoms and drug and alcohol problems with an integrated approach, possibly facilitating access to concurrent computer-delivered mental health treatment; or (iii) provision of specialist mental health interventions by a mental health professional. Decisions regarding the implementation of these treatment options are based on the results of screening and assessment, clinical judgement, and client preparedness to address the various aspects of his/her presentation. Organisational support and commitment are required for drug and alcohol clinicians/teams to effectively intervene with mental health symptomatology in drug and alcohol settings.
